Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We have been able to consolidate storage into Pavilion. Pavilions are our only SANs because it is a bring your own disk solution. When new drives come out, we are able to take out half of the drives in the system, put in new drives, move our VMs over to the new drives, take the other drives out, and populate those with new drives. Then, we are suddenly twice as dense as we were before. NVMe flash is only going to get denser and cheaper so we can make use of that every couple of years by just throwing newer disks into it at a fraction of the cost of a new SAN.""There's lots of flexibility in how we use the resources while also maintaining a small footprint.""The high performance is very valuable, as well as the enterprise reliability features."

"We're hosting virtual infrastructure on the 3PAR storage and it's been very good for that.""HPE 3PAR StoreServ has been stable.""If there is a problem then the HPE facility will detect it and immediately contact me.""HPE 3PAR has all the common storage features like cell provisioning and deduplication. Usually the solution is chosen by the customer as they have a preference, or the setup is already in their environment.""3PAR is different from other storage solutions because it uses a chunklet when we initiate the storage. Every disk is submitted as a 1 GB chunklet. This chunklet can be RAID 1, 4, 5, or 6. This fabulous feature is very useful for me because I can distribute the RAID for any volume. The adaptive optimization is the biggest feature in 3PAR. 3PAR is very usable with thin volume because it detects zeros while writing. Every time I tell the hypervisor to make the full provisioning, it makes the volume as simple provisioning in 3PAR, not full provisioning. Other vendors take this volume as thick provisioning because of which the capacity is reached quickly. It doesn't happen in 3PAR because it detects zeros. It only writes the data, and it doesn't write zeros. There are two processors in 3PAR: the ASIC processor and the main processor. The ASIC processor detects zero writing and doesn't write it, which is a big feature in 3PAR.""The initial setup was straightforward.""This is a very robust product and it offers everything that we are looking for.""There's a lot of good features. HPE 3PAR StoreServ is similar to Dell EMC. It is a high-speed system with automatic failover/failback, integrated with Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware. These are the main reason for choosing HPE 3PAR StoreServ in Denmark. We have a very good consulting service together with the product."

"Good architecture and produces a lot of IOPS.""The replay and IOPS work well.""Updates are very easy to do when the customer is connected to the internet.""The scalability is straightforward.""The deduplication and compression capabilities are powerful.""The performance and the processor are good.""The deployment is fast.""InfoSight is helpful because it is proactive support."

Cons
"The rail system that Pavilion uses to mount up into a standard Dell or APC cabinet extends further back than normal rails, and they cover up the zero PDU slot. So, I don't like the rail system that comes with the device. That is my biggest complaint.""In our current configuration, we can only run the line controllers in high availability, active-standby mode, whereas we would like to see active-active implemented.""I would like to see the management layer improved."

More Pavilion HyperParallel Flash Array Cons →

"The product is quite expensive.""There are issues formulating the upgraded disk.""As long as they can keep the solution stable, it will be good. Stability is very important to us.""This solution only provides active-passive replication, as opposed to active-active.""HPE 3PAR StoreServ could have better integration into the cloud and converged infrastructure.""The GUI interface could be improved. I have been having trouble with one issue in particular. If you look at the DC and DR, if there is a communication break and the link went down—so the data is not replicating from DC to DR—there is no way to find out how much data is ready for transmission. Only the size of the data that needs to be transferred after the link comes up. If the firewall link is down, there is no way of seeing how much data is waiting to be transferred. This is a weak point of 3PAR.""We are using a built-in solution in 3PAR. We are using All-Flash Storage, and there are some difficulties with it. HPE has now developed a new tool system to support All-Flash, and that's why we are changing our investment. They must increase its performance. I want unlimited support, which is very important for performance. I am not interested in spinning disks. HPE is developing new storage systems called Primera, but they must be developed more.""HPE could improve by making an old flash system in order to compete with the current market. For the solution to be more competitive in the mid-range market they could increase the performance."

More HPE 3PAR StoreServ Cons →

"The resellers did the implementation of the solution, we did not do it ourselves. We have ten people for the deployment of the solution.""Scalability, in terms of being able to scale out, is not easy and should be improved.""We have had some stability issues with one array which has happened twice during subsequent software updates but is due to a bad Postgres database.""There is a new version of the Nimble and 3PAR systems called Alletra and they have a lot of new features.""The quality of technical support depends on which member of the support team you speak with.""The stability can be improved.""There is no active-active controller, which means that we can only have one controller online at a time.""I think the scalability of HPE Nimble Storage could be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "This is hardware. They have a singular array that you can populate with your own disk, or you can buy the disks through them. For controllers, you pay for the components inside of the SAN, but there is only one chassis that they work with."
  • "The licensing fees are very reasonable."

  • "We paid for five years of support when we purchased the product."
  • "The SSD is a little bit expensive."
  • "This is not an expensive product but every time you add capacity to it, you need to pay for re-balancing."
  • "Its price is a bit high for adding another tree, but when we purchased it, it was okay with us. We had compared it with EMC and other solutions, and it was okay at that point in time. Our storage has a lifespan of seven to eight years. When you purchase it, you need to keep a headroom of around 40% to 50%. After three to four years, you generally plan for an upgrade. The price is not so bad today for two years or so, and within a year, I might find that I have to upgrade or increase the storage. This usually happens when there is a radical change or a new application has come that is consuming a lot of data, but generally, there is a plan for the amount of data that we generate and the storage upgrade."
  • "It is lower in price as compared to other vendors, such as Dell. As compared to Huawei, all storage solutions are expensive, including this one."
  • "It is a bit more expensive. IBM is cheaper than HPE in Turkey."
  • "This solution is expensive. We pay every year for support. It's a lump sum because we pay for data center support services, and everything is included in one."
  • "The cost is reasonable given that the licensing is all included once you purchase it."

  • "The pricing is better than some of the competitors, such as Dell EMC."
  • "Nimble Storage is too expensive for our enterprise customers."
  • "I would classify it as an expensive product."
  • "HPE Nimble Storage didn't require a license at the time."
  • "The price is negotiable and when we first received the quote it was expensive, but after dealing with them and receiving a discount, the price is reasonable."
  • "The solution is a little pricey compared to others on the market."
  • "I think HPE Nimble Storage is less expensive than Primera and is the best solution for Venezuela."
  • "We pay a one-time fee for terabyte licenses, and the support is paid yearly."
