Comparison Summary
Question: What are the biggest differences between Fortinet Fortigate and VMware SD-WAN?
Answer: I am not very familiar with Fortinet and I do not doubt that it is a good platform, however my experience with VMware SD-Wan has been excellent at a time like this when we are going through Covid-19 where through a VDI combination with SD- WAN provides a convenience in organizations to strengthen the capacities for a mobile and remote connection with high levels of flexibility, speed, performance, simplicity, scalability and above all security.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Anti-Spam web content filterinG.""It's inexpensive compared to some of the other technology out there.""Good anti-malware and web filtering features.""Virtual Domains (VDOMs) are a feature that we found valuable.""Some of the valuable features are the firewall, IPS, web filter, and gateway capabilities. Additionally, it is easy to use and flexible.""The solution is very easy to understand. It's not overly complex.""I think that the UTM features are the most value, as it truly protects my infrastructure.""Fortinet FortiGate appears to be scalable."

"The most valuable feature is load balancing.""There are 400 functionalities of the system.""I have found the dynamic multipoint protocol(DNPO) most useful because it can tell you which is the best circuit to use for different types of traffic.""I would absolutely recommend VeloCloud because it's user-friendly and because the integration is easier than with other solutions.""Proactively detects where problems might arise.""They make use of a combination of different internet lines, which improves quality.""Increases the performance of applications and is easy to deploy.""The biggest feature is called D.M.P.O., or Dynamic Multipath Optimization, which is one of the technologies that they use to deliver or ensure data integrity."

Cons
"The logs need to be better. They need to be more visible and easier to access.""It would be a benefit if Fortinet would release a one-stop solution that is better integrated with other products and an automated emergency response system.""The way everything is set up could be easier. Currently, people need a lot of experience and knowledge to administer it and to link it to devices.""The feedback that I have received is that the performance could be better, and the user experience is not as good compared to a previous solution we used. It could be more user-friendly. Of course, it still works fine for our operations.""There are some license issues. Not every feature must have a separate license. There must be some of kind synergy between the license so we don't have to pay for every individual license that we would like to have.""The pricing could be a bit better, especially when you consider how they have the most basic offering priced.""If I had any criticism that I would give FortiGate, it would be that they need to stop changing their logging format. Every time we do a firmware upgrade, it is a massive issue on the SIM. Parsers have to be rebuilt. Even the FortiGate guys came in and said that they don't play well in the sandbox.""Some of the features in the graphical user interface do not work, which requires that we used the command-line-interface."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"It needs better security.""In an upcoming release, the solution can be more functional and have additional features.""Reporting is an area that can be improved, as there are some features that are lacking with the reporting aspect.""The security of the firewall should be improved. It would be a good idea to have a standalone product with better security.""In an upcoming release, they should allow customers the flexibility to use mobile applications where they can go and check on the information about their networks. A lot of vendors, such as Meraki, have a lot more integration with the use of portals to a mobile application. Having this feature as an alternative to logging into a laptop would be beneficial. If you are a SaaS-based company why not make a mobile application as well. You might not be able to do configurations but at least monitor while away or on vacation.""VeloCloud needs improvement in terms of its security features.""They should provide us with the flexibility to scale up.""They need to start focusing on the security functionality. They should find a way to embed the next-generation firewall functionality within the architecture. They should move more into applying SASE tenants to what they're doing."

    Overview

The FortiGate family of NG firewalls provides proven protection with unmatched performance across the network, from internal segments, to data centers, to cloud environments. FortiGates are available in a large range of sizes and form factors and are key components of the Fortinet Security Fabric, which enables immediate, intelligent defense against known and new threats throughout the entire network.

Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) is the application of softwarebased network technologies that virtualize WAN connections to provide agility,
performance and reliability for network traffic between remote and branch offices to
    data centers and the cloud.

SD-WAN leverages cloud-hosting to simplify deployment and management of
network devices and employs traffic steering to applications in the data center and
the cloud. It combines the bandwidth of broadband with existing WAN connections to
more efficiently and cost-effectively connect users to data center and cloud-based
applications from any location in the network.

SD-WAN optimizes traffic over multiple available connections (MPLS, broadband,
LTE) to deliver traffic across the network, delivering a better user experience to any
location. SD-WAN will dynamically steer traffic to the best available link, and if the
available links show any transmission issues, it will immediately apply remediation for
jitter and packet loss based on policies to ensure performance of the high-priority
    applications.
